Purpose
The purpose of this educational project and research study is to determine if the use of the CxAL-Guide improves the accuracy of undergraduate and graduate nursing students’ estimations of cervical dilation, effacement, station, and fetal position. The two hypotheses are:
1. Undergraduate and graduate nursing students receiving the CxAL-Guide along with normal teaching modalities will more accurately measure cervical dilation, effacement, and station when compared to undergraduate and graduate nursing students who do not use the CxAL-Guide.
2. Undergraduate and graduate nursing students receiving the CxAL-Guide along with normal teaching modalities will be able to determine the correct fetal position more often than undergraduate and graduate nursing students who do not use the CxAL-Guide.

Innovative Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This proposal uses four educational innovations to teach undergraduate and graduate nursing students about assessment of labor. These include:
(a) an investigator-created Cervical Assessment of Labor Guide (CxAL-Guide) to objectively measure the cervical changes during labor and fetal position (b) a DVD presenting content on labor, emergency birth, and instructions for using the CxAl-Guide,
(c) cervical assessment manikins.
(d) internet access to instructional videos on labor, emergency birth, and instructions for using the CxAl-Guide for faculty and students.
(e) an on line PHP interactive survey form entering resultant data from surveys into a MySQL data base. (Both PHP and MySQL are "Open Source").
(f) The instructional videos, interactive survey and database will be accessable for replication, other research, data mining and data warehousing.
